About us

It started in Sweden, Vänersborg in the late 80s when our technology was used to test materials exposed to extreme sunlight and heat. Today, the same technology makes a difference to people's health worldwide. We are of course incredibly proud of our technology, but we are most proud of the experience we give our customers.

Our history

Sunwell - a journey from industry to people

The year was 1987. It was a time when technological progress was transforming the world and innovations revolutionising industries. In a small workshop in western Sweden, SunTech was founded by a group of engineers and researchers with a shared vision: developing a sun simulator for the automotive industry. The aim was to expose the vehicle's components and materials to heat and authentic sunlight to ensure the quality and durability of the various different models.

SunTech's first product, an advanced sun simulator, quickly became a success in the automotive industry. The sun simulator allowed for thorough and realistic testing of the durability of materials in a variety of light and heat combinations and intensities. The company built its good reputation on technical expertise, precision, and reliability. The technology was soon being used by some of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world, and is still in use today.

But it was, in fact, a side effect of the sun simulator that would really put SunTech on the map!

The companies noticed that the people working in the departments using the sun simulation technology were starting to report improved well-being. Employees were healthier, happier and had more energy when they regularly came into contact with the sun simulator’s ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation.

Research was carried out and the results showed that the sun simulator, which emits harmless UV and IR radiation, had very positive effects on people’s health. The UV radiation reduced melatonin production, resulting in people having more energy, and at the same time the light stimulated the body's own vitamin D production mechanisms. Vitamin D is a key element in our immune defences and ensuring robust health.

The insight into the health-giving impacts led to a major shift in the company's operations. Under the leadership of visionary and CEO Ingemar Nilsson, SunTech decided to investigate new markets and potential applications for its technology. Not just for industry, but for people!

Our history

Year 2015

Studies were carried out by three organisations focusing on residential facilities for the elderly and dementia, with both residents and staff taking part. The results were fantastic. The amount of medication being taken by residents for depression fell by 40%, while absences due to illness among staff fell by 30%.

Year 2020

SunTech made its new direction clear for all to see and switches to the Sunwell brand, which at the same time becomes a natural symbol for the company's new mission: spreading well-being and quality of life to people via the positive power of sunlight.

Year 2019

SunTech was acquired and positioned as its own business segment within Ircon Drying System, a subsidiary within the Argynnis Group. The Argynnis Group understood from early on SunTech's idea and vision, and in particular the value in working to promote people’s well-being.

Year 2023

A sales agreement is signed with Klaus Schlenker GmbH in Germany. The company has around 250 retailers who integrate Sunwell into their product ranges on an ongoing basis.

Today

The Sunwell brand is a global leader in light-based health technology and its products are sought-after throughout the world. They are particularly popular in regions with long, dark winters, where natural sunlight is in short supply. Sunwell continues to work on the technology behind sun simulators for use in care and nursing facilities, hotels, spas, and even yoga centres. Offices, gyms and home environments are also seeing growing demand.

The company is investing in research and development to continually improve its sun simulators and investigate new ways of using light to promote health. Sunwell works with medical experts and research institutes to ensure the effects of the technology.

Sunwell’s journey is one example of how innovation and science can lead to unexpected yet fantastic results. By embracing the power of the sun, Sunwell continues with joy to spread light and warmth to people throughout the world.

Our journey is only just getting started!

Our knowledge

Experts in sun therapy

We offer a product equipped with high-tech lamps with the ability to reproduce the entire light spectrum of the sun. Our technology can give us a full day of sun, from sunrise to sunset, in 1 hour, indoors, without dangerous UV radiation.

There are endless lab hours behind this Swedish invention and that is something we value highly. At Sunwell, we place great emphasis on managing our technology in the best possible way, as the world spins ever faster. Technology is developing at a rapid pace and so is people's awareness.

We need to be responsive to both technology development and people's needs in order to maintain our demand and always be one step ahead. We've already been doing it for over two decades. Over the years we have refined and expanded our concept with elements that take the experience to new heights and we continue on the same track.

We were the first in the world with our technology at the end of the 1900th century and we will always work to ensure that our heritage retains its value.

We work with light and heat in the form of radiation. Our awareness of the risks of our product, combined with our passion for our technology means that we stay alert and always up-to-date on new guidelines that apply to artificial solar systems.

We will always guarantee a well-proven, tested and quality-assured product that only makes you feel better. We do this by following trends in technology, taking part in industry news, continuously conducting customer surveys to identify potential improvement opportunities and offering skills development for our employees, such as supplementary educations.

At Sunwell, a dedicated team works that sees technology as a craft that can always be improved. Our team consists of everything from salespeople to mechanics, but what we all have in common is that we love our product and are passionate about the experience it creates.

We are grateful that, through our product, we can give people a healthier life with more energy, joy of life and harmony. Not least for those who need it the most. We stand humbly before the task and to be able to continue to offer this requires us to stay on our toes. And we do that with pleasure.

FAQ

Is it real sunlight?

Yes! Sunwell’s sun light is comparable to the real thing, with the advantage that the amount of UV light has been reduced to a non-harmful level.

Is this the same kind of light as at a solarium?

No! Solariums use high levels of primarily UV-A, with the aim of the user’s skin tanning quickly, while Sunwell sunlight contains the full light spectrum of the sun. The aim is not to tan, but rather to promote health and well-being through sun therapy, which includes light, warmth and low levels of UV.

Have any scientific studies been carried out?

Yes, including one entitled ‘Artificial Environment’s Influence on the Mood’, involving an assessment of hedonic tone, relaxation and activity. You can read a research report produced by R&D Centre Fyrbodal, Region Västra Götaland, which documents the positive effects of a sunroom at a care home for the elderly.

Is it like being outside?

Yes, that is our intention. However, the harmful levels of UV light have been removed. One hour in a Sunwell environment is equivalent to approx. 20 minutes outdoors on a sunny day in the summer.

Do you get a tan?

Good question, we understand what you're wondering.
The answer is no.

Can you simulate an entire day?

Yes! Sunwell’s sun simulators can control the light to vary from sunrise to full daylight, afternoon light and down to evening light and sunset.

What are the effects of spending time in a sunroom?

The combination of invigorating sunlight, a comfortable warmth, a gentle sea breeze, calming background sounds, and the exclusive environment will help you relax and take your mind on a long-awaited holiday. This experience reduces stress, increases energy and boosts well-being.

Does it work like light therapy?

Yes, and very well! The light contains the whole visible spectrum, from 400 to 780 nm, and can help combat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), for example. Our sunlight is several times more intense than normally used in light therapy rooms, and for that reason is more effective.

Do you have to use sunglasses?

You can use sunglasses, but it is not required.
The light from the artificial sun is strong, so you should not look directly at it, just like you would not look directly at the real sun.

Is the light dangerous?

No! Sunwell’s UV levels are reduced to safe levels, falling below current Swedish standards with a limit value of 30 J/m2 weighted radiation, 270–400 nanometres for an hour of sunbathing a day.

Does the light have medicinal effects?

Yes! The heat has a relaxing effect on the body and provides relief from various joint issues and muscle aches.

The light can help combat depression and SAD.

The UV element can stimulate production of vitamin D, and thus boost immune defences.

Is it safe and tested?

Yes! Our sunlight was developed in consultation with European laboratories, Lund University, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden.

Do you need sunscreen?

No! Not for protecting yourself from UV light.
It can be used if you find that you experience dry skin in warm weather.

Reviews

"Imagine a nice autumn day and all the elderly who want to get out. The staff does not have time to dress all the users and then many remain sitting locked in their wards. Now with the sunroom, everything is much easier! With fewer staff, the elderly can still get out in the sun, as more people can go to the sunroom themselves and enjoy it!”

Staff at nursing homes

"We work intensively as our own entrepreneurs and a break is always appreciated! The first day consisted of meetings in all its forms and the evening was private time in the SPA department. The sun room was a definite favourite! A glass of wine and sun!!!”

Visitors of Spa hotels

"A pampering place for me is the spa department at the bath house in Skövde where I live. There is a simulated tropical beach. I decide myself if I want to go to Bali, Mauritius or the West Indies. Then the wind, that is, the fans, starts to blow and the sun, that is, the lights, shine. Wonderfully!"

Visitors to the bathhouse facility

"You become very relaxed and feel good, and if you feel good mentally, you also feel good physically. It's connected. You feel good in the sunroom! It's this thing about the warmth and the light that undoubtedly makes you feel GOOD.”

Pensioner in a nursing home

"It reminds me of sun, swimming and summer. It's warm and nice. It was really relaxing!”
